This sleek female lion is quintessentially feline with formidable musculature, subdued power and ineffable grace.She measures 7 1/4" x 9 3/8" x 2 1/2" perched atop 1 5/8" x 3 1/4" x 9 1/2" blocks of polished natural onyx with agate-like layering having sgrafitto signatures in the artist's hand.  Waldmann has captured the cat as she  langorously stretches and retains the original RICH opaque verdigris green patina with pleasing brown rubs on the ear tips.  Oscar Waldman (Swiss, 1856-1937) was a well-respected animalier sculptor, who spent hours drawing subjects from life at the zoo and won awards for his work at the Exposition Universelle of Paris, 1900.  He worked most of his life in Paris and regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy, London.  The present work, from the decade before his passing, dates around 1925 and draw on popular art deco coloration and material choices.  You will note some roughness on the corners of the onyx blocks/base.  See our other sales for a companion piece.
